CHICAGO - Jerome Gilson, a senior shareholder at Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, was a LexisNexis featured author at the 131st International Trademark Association's (INTA) Annual Meeting, which was held from May 16, 2009 through May 20, 2009 in Seattle, Washington. Mr. Gilson, the original author of the landmark treatise Gilson on Trademarks, autographed complimentary copies of his newest work, Handling Trademark Problems Posed by Fan-Created Content, co-authored by Mr. Gilson and his daughter, Ms. LaLonde, the current author of Gilson on Trademarks, at the LexisNexis booth in the exhibit hall.
Mr. Gilson has practiced trademark and unfair competition law for more than 45 years. He has handled scores of trials and appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and the federal courts and has written and spoken widely on trademark law. He has received numerous awards and other professional recognition, including the International Trademark Association's President's Award for Dedicated and Distinguished Service. But, he is perhaps best known nationally and internationally as the original author of Gilson on Trademarks (LexisNexis/Matthew Bender) (supplemented three times annually) (1974-2006) (formerly Trademark Protection and Practice). In 2006 Ms. LaLonde replaced him as author and he now acts as collaborator.
In 2008 Mr. Gilson was honored by Managing Intellectual Property with its Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2007 he was inducted into the IP Hall of Fame, sponsored by Intellectual Asset Magazine. In 2003 he was ranked one of the top five U.S. trademark practitioners in Euromoney's Best of the Best Expert Guide, receiving the "most votes worldwide" and in 1998 he was named the top trademark practitioner in the world by Managing Intellectual Property. Mr. Gilson and Ms. LaLonde have also been awarded the Burton Award for Distinguished Writing three times, earning the firm the William C. Burton Record of Distinction Award, recognizing the accomplishment of three consecutive wins by attorneys at a law firm as a direct reflection of the highest quality of legal writing at the firm.
