CHICAGO - Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione was pleased to sponsor Julius Henderson, a Whitney Young Magnet High School junior, so that he could attend a 2008 summer training program at Temple University in Philadelphia. Mr. Henderson was selected to participate in Temple University's Physician Scientist Training Program, a nine-week summer program for high school students interested in bio-medical research careers. Due to budget cuts by the National Institutes of Health, funding for students to attend the program was no longer available. Lisa Wiersma, Interim Director of Partnerships, Chicago Public Schools, contacted Jerold A. Jacover, past president of Brinks and a participant in the Principal for a Day program at Whitney Young High School, to sponsor Mr. Henderson on behalf of the firm at this invaluable summer training program.
Participants of the Physician Scientist Training Program are selected based on an essay, their scores on the SSAT national exam, a GPA minimum equivalent of an A minus for a three-year academic transcript and a series of interviews. Students attending the program will serve as research interns with a Ph.D. researcher from various American and Canadian academic institutions and attend seminars conducted by M.D. and Ph.D. researchers. The program was created in 1985 as a way to target students with ethnic or racial backgrounds underrepresented in the bio-medical fields.
Whitney M. Young Magnet High School is Chicago's first magnet school and has a 32-year tradition of offering a rigorous college-prep curriculum to Chicago's most academically advanced students, representing a range of racial and socio-economic backgrounds. The school takes great pride in preparing its students for admission to the top universities in the U.S. For further information, contact www.wyoung.org.
