ANN ARBOR – Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., is pleased to announce that Lawrence G. Almeda, a partner in the firm’s Ann Arbor office, was the keynote address speaker at the annual Rizal Day Celebration dinner held on Saturday December 29, 2007, at The Rock Financial Showplace Diamond Center in Novi, Michigan.
Rizal Day celebrates the life and achievements of Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal (1861-1896). Rizal was a writer, sculptor, ophthalmologist, linguist, inventor and painter, but is most remembered as an advocate for political reform in the Philippines during the late 19th Century. His writings focused on the need for significant reforms and an end to Spanish dominance; his death was the catalyst for the Philippine Revolution of 1896 which signaled the end of more than 300 years of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines.
The Rizal Day celebration was hosted by the Filipino American Community Council (FILAMCCO). FILAMCCO is an umbrella organization that facilitates and organizes projects for Filipino Americans. Every year, approximately 1,000 Filipino Americans in the Detroit area celebrate Rizal Day.
Mr. Almeda is a member of the State Advisory Committee for the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights; the Governor's Advisory Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs; the Chair of the Business Law Section of the Washtenaw County Bar Association and a member of its Board of Directors; Assistant Regional Governor for Central Region for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and the immediate past President of the Michigan Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
Mr. Almeda ’s practice focuses on patent opinions and prosecution in the medical, chemical, nanotechnology and mechanical arts. Mr. Almeda earned his J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. Additionally, he holds a L.L.M in Intellectual Property Law from The John Marshall Law School.
