Brinks Hires in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

CHICAGO – Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the country, has hired patent attorney Benjamin I. Edlavitch in the firm’s Chicago office and Dr. Harry (He) Li as a scientific advisor in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office.

Mr. Edlavitch focuses his practice on patent acquisition and prosecution, including developing patent procurement and prosecution strategies, preparing due diligence assessments, and identifying licensing opportunities. His experience also includes patent litigation in the areas of software, mobile electronics, computer information systems and electrical engineering.

Before joining Brinks, Mr. Edlavitch was in-house counsel at Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek in Milwaukee, Wis., and before that at Libera, Inc., in Jamestown, New York. Previously, he was of counsel at a Chicago-based Klintworth & Rozenblat IP. Prior to practicing law, Mr. Edlavitch was a consultant in the software engineering sector.

Mr. Edlavitch holds a J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was senior editor of Chicago-Kent Journal of International and Comparative Law, associate editor of Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property and a winner of The Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction’s Excellence for the Future Award® in trade and intellectual property rights. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Mr. Edlavitch also holds a B.S.E.E., cum laude, from University of Illinois, a certificate with distinction in computer information systems, University of California, Berkeley and a B.S. in biology from Washington University.

As a scientific advisor, Harry (He) Li joins Brinks‘ Washington, D.C., office to assist with investigations at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and other matters in the areas of electrical and mechanical arts. Dr. Li has prosecuted patent applications in diverse fields, including semiconductors, wireless communications, signal processing, computer networking, medical devices, electrical circuits, optical devices, business methods and mechanical devices.

Fluent in Mandarin, Dr. Li is currently completing his J.D. at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Before joining Brinks, Dr. Li was a patent technical specialist at Browdy & Neimark in Washington, D.C. and, previously, at Harness Dickey & Pierce, in Reston, Va.

Dr. Li holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from University of Maryland, an M.S. in electrical-mechanical engineering from the University of Science and Technology in Beijing, and a B.S., magna cum laude, in materials science and engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, in Harbin, China. He published numerous technical papers during his academic career, based on his research concerning microelectromechancial resonators.

Dr. Li is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and a technical paper reviewer for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering.
