Brinks Attorney and Author Mary Squyres to Present on International Trademark Law

CHICAGOMary M. Squyres, a shareholder at Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, will present on International Trademark Law at several upcoming in-person and virtual events. Ms. Squyres is the co-author, with Nanette Norton, of Trademark Practice Throughout the World, a three-volume treatise on managing an international trademark portfolio. The book is published by West, a Thomson Reuters business and is updated annually.

Mary SquyresTrademark Practice Throughout the World is written for anyone who manages an international trademark portfolio, from domestic trademark attorneys and patent lawyers to international trademark practitioners. The comprehensive treatise includes information focused on the trademark laws in each country, and is the only reference that provides background information explaining why laws require what they do. Trademark Practice Throughout the World details how to handle obstacles in obtaining an international trademark, and provides guidance on searching methods and techniques.

Mary Squyres chairs the International Trademark Practice Group at Brinks, managing more than 15,000 active trademark files. Her practice includes litigation, licensing and prosecution—including determining international filing strategies, negotiating worldwide mutual co-existence agreements, and designing effective enforcement strategies to defend marks and prevent infringements.

On September 28, 2011, Ms. Squyres and Ms. Norton will present “Creation of a Global Brand,” a West LegalEdcenter online CLE program. The program, the first in a series, considers the basic concepts behind creating a global brand and will examine the global protection of trademarks today.

Ms. Squyres and her Brinks colleague Tiffany Shimada will present a Brinks CLEar Knowledge Now webcast on October 13, 2011. The presentation, “The New gTLDs: To Apply or Not to Apply?”, will focus on the application process and fees for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs), the process regarding objections to new gTLDs, and practical offensive and defensive strategies concerning new gTLDs.

Finally, Ms. Squyres will present “Trademarks and the Internet: A Worldwide Perspective” at The John Marshall Law School Center for Intellectual Property Law on October 18, 2011 in Chicago.
